Master of Science in Health Informatics

Admission Requirements for the Master of Science in Health Informatics

Consideration for admission to the Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) program requires:

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution or first-professional doctorate-degree, specifically when no baccalaureate degree was offered (e.g., Pharm.D.); or meet the dual enrollment eligibility requirements as outlined within the College of Pharmacy.
  2. Submission of official transcripts, which can be in the form of attested credentials from a University-recognized document verification agency, of all college-level work.
  3. A minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or have a minimum cumulative graduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale associated with a previous master's degree. This includes classes from all institutions attended. Students who have a 2.5 cumulative undergraduate grade point average may be considered for conditional admission but must attain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average in the first nine hours of the MSHI program to be fully admitted to the program.
  4. Fulfillment of the following prerequisites, demonstrated by official transcript and course syllabus (if applicable), completion of courses or proficiency examination:
    1. Medical Terminology or HINF 502 Clinical Foundations for Health Informatics
    2. Anatomy and Physiology or HINF 502 Clinical Foundations for Health Informatics
    3. Spreadsheet/Database Applications (Excel or Access) or HINF 503 Computer Foundations for Health Informatics

Any prerequisite courses submitted for consideration must be completed with a final grade of “C” or above. Any proficiency examination taken must be completed with at least the minimum passing score. A student MAY be admitted under Conditional Admission status to complete their prerequisites, and these must be completed within a specified time frame. A student attains Full Admission status upon completion of the prerequisites and all other admission requirements.

Students whose native language is not English and who have not graduated from an English speaking university in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia must meet the previously listed admissions conditions plus:

  1. A verified Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet-based test (iBT), IELTS, or Pearson Test of English as required. The TOEFL total score must be a minimum of 79 with 20 or better in speaking and 20 or better in writing. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) must be a minimum overall band score of 6.5 with a minimum 6.0 score in the reading and writing sub bands. The Pearson Test of English (academic) score must be a minimum of 61. Full admission is dependent on satisfying all admission requirements. Students may receive conditional admission, if not supplying a TOEFL, IELTS or Pearson score at the acceptable level. These students are required to test in the Intensive English Language Program, and if necessary, complete coursework in English. Students admitted with a 6.5 IELTS composite score without 6.0 score in the reading and writing sub bands, may enroll in the program but must complete English competency courses for a reading and writing sub band that is below a 6.0.
  2. All students who are not an American citizen or permanent resident must provide an affidavit of financial support (original).
