ENGL 348 Public and Professional Discourse

This course examines theories of how texts and ideas circulate in public spheres and the role of authorship in environments that increasingly challenge traditional notions of the relationship between author and reader. Topics will range broadly to include discourse from a variety of perspectives, roles, and actions. Students will consider more traditional, language-based discourse alongside discourse from art, popular culture, digital media platforms, and government. The primary emphasis of this course is theory, so the majority of readings and assignments will be focused on critical analysis of discursive practices through a theoretical lens.
